September is National Suicide Prevention Awareness Month, which is a great time to bring attention to a subject that is often shamed and misunderstood. Over a million people are affected by suicide every year, but many still suffer in silence. During this National Suicide Prevention Awareness Month, we all can get involved by spreading the word, helping each other, and remembering that hope is always nearby.

The Power of Talking About Suicide

Talking about suicide is hard, but it’s necessary. Many people avoid talking because they are afraid of saying the wrong thing or do not know how to help. Yet, reaching out, listening without judgment, and showing empathy can be powerful lifelines. Contacting a friend, family member, or coworker to see how they’re doing can often make a huge difference. Remember that it’s okay to ask “Are you okay?” or “What can I do to help you?” These questions might seem small, but they can be life-changing.

Supporting Mental Health at Ohana Behavioral Health

At Ohana Behavioral Health, we recognize the importance of community in mental health. We understand that the more we talk openly about mental health and suicide, the more we can create safe spaces where individuals feel seen and heard. This month, we encourage everyone to be an advocate for those who are struggling, not just in September but every day. Even sharing resources, like crisis hotline numbers or local support groups, can offer a lifeline to someone in need.

You Are Not Alone

If you or someone you know is struggling, remember that you are not alone. Reach out for help—whether it’s a friend, family member, mental health professional, or helpline. There is always hope, even when it seems far away. Your life is valuable.

Ending the Stigma Together

Together, we can create a world where no one has to face these battles alone. Let’s use this month to raise our voices, spread compassion, and take steps toward ending the stigma surrounding suicide. Everyone and every discussion is important.
