Mary Hawthorne- Professional Background

she/her/hers

Before beginning my path to becoming a therapist, I served in the United States Army for eight years and deployed once to Iraq during Operation Iraqi Freedom. During my military service, I obtained my Bachelor of Arts in Psychology from Columbia College. After leaving the service, I completed my master’s degree in Marriage and Family Therapy through Antioch University. I completed the certification in Play Therapy at Antioch University, and I am working toward my Registered Play Therapy (RPT). I am also a Certified AutPlay® Provider.

I am currently licensed as a Marriage and Family Therapy Associate (LMFTA). With three years of experience working in an inpatient behavioral hospital with adults as a mental health specialist and in community mental health with children, adolescents, and adults, I have developed a diverse clinical background.

Specialization and Focus

I work with all ages; my passion is working to build and strengthen the bond between children and parents by using child-parent relationship therapy. Being a veteran, I also have a passion for working with service members, veterans, and their families, assisting them in the reintegration process and co-parenting during deployments.

Therapeutic Approach

I incorporate theories such as play therapy, person-centered therapy, solution-focused therapy, narrative therapy, and cognitive-behavioral therapy to build and strengthen the therapeutic alliance. During the intake session, we will go over the treatment goals and therapeutic approaches I will use while working with you and your family. For children under the age of thirteen, I like to have parent sessions every four weeks to touch base and discuss the client’s overall goals and new challenges the child might be facing.

In addition to my current focus, I specialize in perinatal mental health, supporting individuals and families during the transformative journey of pregnancy and the postpartum period. Drawing from my military background, I offer specialized assistance to service members, veterans, and their families navigating the challenges of parenthood within a military context. My approach emphasizes building and strengthening the bond between parents and children through child-parent relationship therapy.

I am committed to providing comprehensive, compassionate care that empowers individuals and families to navigate life’s challenges with resilience and strength. Together, we will work towards fostering positive growth and healing in your journey towards mental and emotional well-being.

When I’m not doing therapy…

I enjoy cooking and baking, and spending time with my husband, my twin girls, as well as my German Shepard, Zoey. I love living in Washington and exploring the great Pacific Northwest.
